Our garden started with one bed in 2007 and has progressed to a point that the our entire property is now habitat. The plants in the yard show the progression from a Waterwise focused landscape to one focused on Biodiversity with native plants and creatures. This change still incorporates the Waterwise principals but makes our ecology in north Texas a priority.
Blackland Prairie plants thrive in our clay soil and extreme temperatures. From the deep freezes of the winter to the scorching heat of the summer. They are okay with the torrential downpours and the droughts. All of this requiring minimal effort from us. Not only do native plants require less maintenance, they also bring in local critters - from microscopic organisms to apex predators.
We derive great joy from our space and hope you do too. We encourage people to feel welcome to wander our front yard garden and return as often as they like to witness how a landscape can be created to support biodiversity.
With each visit the property changes. As different plants come into bloom we get new colors, shapes and textures. We see new creatures stopping by, changing form or coming out of or disappearing into their hiding places. Not only do we hope you enjoy hearing about the garden, we hope it will inspire you to look for ways to incorporate nature into your environment.
We all have an opportunity to be stewards of our spaces. Feel free to swing by to be inspired to shift towards supporting our ecosystem in your own space.
